New Year – New Beginning?

New Year – New Beginning?

Today has been dubbed “Divorce Monday” by the media on the basis that this is reportedly the most depressing day of the year and the busiest month for filing for divorce.

According to reports, over 1.8 million couples have argued at some point over the Christmas period, with rows over chores and gifts, excess alcohol, financial pressures and disagreements with family members topping the list.

Experiencing any sort of relationship or family problem can be a stressful, emotional time. Such feelings may have exasperated over the festive period with the increased social pressure to have a good time making things seem worse if it is marred by arguments or disappointment.

If you are considering separating from your partner, you are certainly not alone. The latest statistics from the Office of National Statistics estimate that 42% of marriages end up in divorce.

The UK’s largest relationship counsellors, Relate have also highlighted that January is the busiest time of year for them. As noted by Ruth Sutherland, CEO of the service provider:

“Sadly, many couples and families face a tough time over Christmas as it’s often when people spend concentrated time together – which can bring to light any underlying issues. Also, New Year is a time when many of us naturally assess how life is going and this can make people think about how their relationships are faring. The high number of calls we receive in January suggests that many people are considering what they want from their relationships and what their next steps will be.”

Divorce, separation or relationship problems do not necessarily involve a bitter litigation process. Although this may be unavoidable in some circumstances, there are many other options which could be considered including mediation, negotiation or implementing wealth protection measures.

2014 may be your opportunity to make a fresh start.
