The importance of up-to-date SIC codes for your business

Companies House has highlighted the importance of keeping Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) codes accurate and up to date. A SIC code is the five‑digit number used to describe a company’s main business activity.

SIC codes play an important role in how a business is understood by others, particularly investors, lenders and other third parties, as they often rely on them to assess what a company does and whether it is a suitable fit for funding or opportunities. We have seen that SIC code inaccuracies creates confusion, delays and can impact funding applications.

Under the Economic Crime and Corporate Transparency Act, Companies House now has stronger powers to challenge or reject incorrect information on the register. This means businesses should regularly review and update their SIC codes to ensure they accurately reflect current operations.
