Home / International Family Equality Day – raising awareness of equality and family diversity
5th May 2023
Sunday 7th May 2023 is the annual International Family Equality Day (IFED). Since 2012 the first Sunday in May has marked this unique awareness day focusing on the importance of equality and family diversity.
IFED aims for equal support of every family and strives for a society where diversity is not seen as a threat but as a sign of strength. This year’s motto of Power Up Families calls on all families to embrace their uniqueness and claim equality and justice and encourages everyone to support, accept and take care of each other.
The celebration also raises awareness among politicians and the general public about the need for equal treatment and recognition for all families regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity.
The IFED explain that ‘each of these ‘rainbow families’ has very different lived equality experiences, often depending not only on what country they live in, but what street they live on. In some countries, our families enjoy equal rights and social recognition but in far too many others, both parents and their children face overt discrimination and have to live under a constant threat of violence’.
Maria von Kanel, IFED founder said; “By making our families stronger, our families make us stronger in return. We all need to welcome and respect our differences and cultivate our readiness to grow together – both in the context of our families as well as in society in general.”
Kuits are extremely proud to support IFED. Visit the IFED website here to see how you can get involved and show support to rainbow families worldwide.
