Tenant Fees Act 2019 to come into force on 1 June 2019

18 Feb 2019

On 12 February the Tenant Fees Act 2019 received Royal Assent.  The Act restricts the ability of landlords and letting agents to charge certain fees to tenants and prospective tenants of assured shorthold tenancies, residential licences and student accommodation in England. The provisions will come into force on 1 June 2019 for new and renewal leases and licences and 1 June 2020 for existing leases and licences.  Limits will also be placed on the level of deposit that can be taken.

The government intends to publish guidance shortly.
