Kuits supports Manchester arts community in pledge to eradicate sexual harassment

23 Feb 2018

Commercial law firm Kuits has delivered a package of free training and advice to the Manchester arts community in support of its bid to eradicate sexual harassment from the sector.

A group of board members, directors and staff from Manchester International Festival (MIF) joined senior members of other arts organisations at Kuits’ city centre offices on 14 February for a workshop on promoting equality and diversity in the workplace.

Kuits are also supporting MIF by reviewing their staff policies and handbooks.

The Manchester arts community joined forces in November 2017 in the wake of the Weinstein allegations to pledge their commitment to end harassment in the sector. Twenty arts organisations in Manchester signed the pledge including MIF, HOME and Manchester Art Gallery.

Kuits employment senior associate, Mark McKeating, said: “Whilst the media storm surrounding sexual harassment started in Hollywood, recent reporting and the #MeToo campaign proves that it is equally a problem within UK businesses. The Manchester business community needs to up its game.

“A company serious about protecting its employees will have trained their board and staff on discrimination and harassment issues in the workplace. Providing professional training for staff will enable businesses to promote a fairer, more diverse working environment, preserve positive working relationships, and help attract and retain the best quality employees.

“Kuits has been a corporate supporter of MIF for a number of years and we are therefore delighted to support its pledge to end harassment in the Manchester arts community.”

Connie Page, Development Coordinator at MIF, said: “This training was invaluable for us; at a time when we are expanding our team and planning for The Factory we want to make sure we are continuing to create a fair and diverse working environment for all those we interact with, from volunteers to contractors, collaborators and our team of staff.

“Kuits delivered a detailed and accessible afternoon which will help inform our policies, contracts and handbooks. We are delighted to count Kuits among our corporate supporters and greatly appreciate their sharing of expertise and support.”
