Government announces £1bn fund for remediation of unsafe cladding systems

1st June 2020 - Published by Kuits residential property team

On 26 May 2020, the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) announced the availability of a £1 billion Building Safety Fund in 2020/21 for the remediation of unsafe non-aluminium composite materials (ACM) cladding systems on residential buildings that are at least 18 metres tall.

The fund will cover qualifying buildings in both the private and social housing sectors in England. The registration process opens today (1 June 2020), will close on 31 July 2020 and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

The fund is designed to address the financial obstacles preventing remediation of buildings with unsafe non-ACM cladding systems. This fund is predominately targeted at supporting leaseholders in the private sector facing significant bills. Applications to the fund must come from building owners or other entities legally responsible for making buildings safe, as leaseholders themselves cannot register for the fund. However, it appears the fund will not support remediation projects that have already started.

Given the current situation with COVID-19, the launch of this fund will provide a much-needed boost to the owners of properties in these buildings and we’ll hopefully see a bit more confidence return to the market.
