A Manchester law firm which is approaching its centenary today unveiled plans to double in size over the next five years.

Kuit Steinart Levy's roots trace back to 1909, when Bernard Kuit established his own practice. He later merged with firms run by Vivian Steinart and Jack Levy. Today, the outfit has 21 partners and a total staff of 144, focusing on property, corporate, banking, licensing, tax, intellectual property, employment and commercial litigation.

Fee income is approaching £10m, and executive partner Robert Levy, 47, the son of Jack, today outlined his vision for growth.

He said: "We will launch our five-year plan on May 1.

"The goal is to double our fee income and possibly staff numbers, taking us to the next tier. It will be hard, but achievable. We could do it with bolt-ons, by bringing in firms based in Manchester or partners with strong client followings - a strategy we have adopted successfully in recent years with the arrival of David Haffner, Anthony Lyons and Ian Morris, specialists in commercial property, licensing and IP respectively.

"At the same time it is vitally important that we retain the culture of our firm. We do not have a cut throat-throat culture, there is no climate of fear or blame, and no airs or graces. It is not dog-eat-dog here."

Robert, who focuses on business development, works closely with managing partner Jonathan Marks.

The duo have spearheaded Kuit Steinart Levy's growth from an 80-strong practice seven years ago. Clients include Manchester City, Habitat, Allied Irish Bank, Nationwide Building Society, Land Securities, the Individual Restaurant Company and McBride. Its main office is in the St Mary's Parsonage, and there is a satellite operation in nearby South King Street. A move to the next tier would see it compete more fully against rivals such as Cobbetts, DWF and Pannone.
